Wing Surf Foil

Steve Laubaney, one of the most experienced windsurfers in the french GUNSAILS team, gives us his first impressions after testing the brand new HY-WING 4 and 5 m².

Steve, you have just received the brand new HY-WING 4 and 5 m². What are your first impressions when unpacking them?
My first contact with the HY-WING was also my first with this new discipline, in which I am an absolute beginner! What strikes me as a windsurfer is the small size: only one bag, no mast, no boom! From now on, there will always be a HY-WING on my bus!
Inflating is also done very quickly. The most difficult thing was to find the leash, which is hidden in a small zipped pocket in an outer flap of the bag;-)

What are your impressions after a first try?
This was my first real wing session, I had only tried it for a few minutes before. I have a small board for my size, but I did a few rounds on my knees before standing up, just enough time to understand how to handle the Wing. You have to remember to leave the Wing at its zenith before you close it or it will tip over.
You also have to remember that, like a water start in windsurfing, you grab the end of the wing to turn it over. After an hour I did my first flights and was able to go upwind on my own at the end of the session without having received any advice, nor ever having done any kite or wake foiling.
I still need to work on the manoeuvres and launching in lighter winds to fully enjoy the next sessions.

What do you think about the performance?
It's still a bit early for me to talk about performance, but I think of very good handling, it's light, easy and manageable, the wind was very strong, too strong to even launch, and the wing doesn't deform at all despite my almost 100 kg. A friend of mine who is a much better wingsurfer tested it and found it very easy to hold in strong winds and stable in manoeuvres! I'm already impatient to get on with it to use its full potential!

Who do you think the HY-WING is for?
For everyone! The lightness, small size and ease of use make it really accessible. The stability and firm profile make it a formidable wing for advanced pilots too! I can't wait to show it to everyone, including my beginner students!
